International Markets: Developed, Emerging, and Frontier

When performing a global examination of stocks, investment analysts routinely separate markets into three broad categories: developed, emerging, and frontier. Developed markets consist of countries that have the largest and most advanced economies and also tend to have the most sophisticated financial systems. In general, emerging markets have less developed economies and financial systems than do developed markets. Emerging markets are followed in level of development by frontier markets, which generally have even smaller markets with less sophistication. Frontier markets are commonly considered a subcategory of emerging markets. Table 6.1 reports the countries included in each of the three broad classifications according to MSCI as of November 2013.
